BEST USE OF YOUR EDUCATION

There is this unrealistic correlation between attaining a University degree and being employed. This “mix-up” put us in this high level of employment in our country today.

Basically, or maybe ideally, people go to the University to acquire knowledge, to be educated. Narrowing down its prospects to getting employed is like choosing to clip ones wings.

It takes discipline to be educated. It involves submitting oneself to the tutelage of another, or an institution. Forgoing ones time and other activities there may be to pursue. And with diligence and commitment, undertake all tasks assigned. Imbibe all the rules and agree to the subjected to punishment at any error.

Most importantly, education exposes one to abstractions and novelties, and your success is determined by how well you are able to comprehend and understand them all.

University result is graded on cumulative performance. It is inclusive of the very best and worst performances. Any period of disturbance or distraction that may affect academic performance can be made up for, or compensated for by days of non-disturbance. So one event or even two cannot be the reason for a poor grade upon graduation. The cumulative performance to a great extent rightfully defines you.

A University degree certifies that you have been tested in character and learning, and graded accordingly. It is proof that you have the dedication to be committed to a course, and be diligent enough to see it to completion. People argue that examination is not a true test of knowledge. But how else can ones comprehension, precision, accuracy and speed be tested and determined.

All these are things an employer would like to know. This is where acquiring education and being qualified for a job meets. There is hardly any way an employer can ascertain ones abilities within the time frame the recruitment process lasts. But a University degree certifies your proficiency.

People wonder why someone that studied English and African Arts would end up climbing the ladder of success in the banking industry. The “why” behind it is simple – what is needed to climb is ability to assimilate novel ideas, comprehend it , and apply it wherever or whenever needed. Education impacts and tests this.

This is what employers look for in employees. And also this is right about what it takes to set-up something of your own. That, and just a little more.

Any society that has an inflated level of unemployment clearly depend more on the former and less on the latter. Getting employed is not the “end-game” of being educated. Securing a job is just one of the many things that can come out from being educated. Education opens up the mind, and an open mind is a pivot of many possibilities.

If one can commit oneself to the optimal performance, diligence, efficiency, goal-oriented, etc they promise would-be employers at interviews, stretch ourselves like they are willing to do for an employer,our society would have far more business owners and service providers than job seekers.
